How to stop chasing perfection and start your business!

Is that mean old nasty voice of perfection keeping you from growing your business?

Been there done that but I’m not listening to perfect anymore. Case in point:

This Procrastepreneur idea has been a long time in the making. Almost three years now and I’ve got this old blog to prove it. I need to overhaul everything and it’s driving me CRAZY.  But when I saw Taylor Jones’ inspiring tweet about quitting his job to pursue his business, I started writing the post in my head. His story was inspiring and exactly what I needed to get me back on track with the blog. So I wrote it, but of course all the fears and mean, nasty inner dialogue got real loud, real fast.

“Your blog looks terrible.  It’s old. It makes you look bad. You should really re-vamp it BEFORE you start posting again.”

Let me tell you something, I have listened to that BS way too long. That type of chatter has stopped me in the past BUT as a recovering procrastinator I have learned to ignore it. Trust me, I am ignoring it right now as I write this post.

Have you experienced that before? Here’s what you’ve got to do:

Recognize that perfection is a moving target

Nothing you do will ever truly be perfect.  As your skill levels improve so will your standards.  I know you know this is true but you need to remember to apply the logic. Just look back at when you first started thinking about pursing your business. I bet you have elevated your game significantly since then.  The longer you do something the better your products and services will be.

Acknowledge that your concerns are legitimate.

It’s true my website does need an overhaul, but should it keep me from posting?  Nope!
Okay yeah, there are things I need to do to get it to the level I will be satisfied with.  And yeah, I know it will take time but in this case it my concerns shouldn’t stop me from moving forward.

Make an action plan to address your concerns.
Your concerns are valid and shouldn’t be ignored.  After you are done the task that you were trying to prevent yourself from doing, you need to address them. Develop a plan of action so that you can get ‘er done and they can stop getting in the way.

Business is never perfect, effective businesses embrace change and constant improvement. Think Facebook was perfect the day launched?  I admire the fact that they are willing to try new things and if doesn’t work they take it down and try something new.  Perfection is a moving target so as long as you recognize that your concerns are valid and you have a plan in place to rectify the situation you are well on your way to becoming the entrepreneur you’ve been putting off.
